from october 27 to 29, the national finals of the 6th "xin yi cup" china university geography science exhibition took place at northwest university. two teams of undergraduate students from lanzhou university's college of earth and environmental sciences stood out among 73 teams from 39 universities across the nation. they were awarded the first prize in the human geography group, the most academic theme award, the most innovative theme award, and the third prize in the natural geography group.

the participating teams dedicated seven months to prepare for the competition. their journey took them from the preliminary rounds in northern china to the national finals in xi'an. wang xiangrong, one of the participants, explained, "our team began preparations in may, collecting and processing data, building models, creating presentations, and writing speeches. every step of our progress relied on the close collaboration among team members." zhang yukun, another team member, added, "during the competition, we not only showcased the excellence of lanzhou university's students but also learned and observed the presentations of various schools across the country. these covered diverse research perspectives, including architecture along the maritime silk road, rural service accessibility, and trunk economics. the competition promoted exchange among geography undergraduate students nationwide, broadening our horizons and providing significant insights into understanding scientific research for undergraduates."

this competition, hosted by the china geographical society and the school of geography, geographical science, and urban planning at sun yat-sen university, had the theme "regional commonalities and characteristics." it aimed to encourage geography science students to comprehend the scientific connotations, convey the values of our era, grasp the crucial significance of the carrying capacity of resources, and suitability for territorial spatial development in optimizing the pattern for protecting territorial space development. these efforts contribute to national implementation of the system for protecting territorial space development, integrating mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes, grasslands, and sands into a single cohesive unit for comprehensive conservation, and systematic governance.
