from october 13 to 15, the "new ants cup," the 6th china university geography science exhibition contest (northern region), was hosted by hebei normal university. two teams from our college participated and excelled in the competition, successfully advancing to the national finals.

the northern region finals of this contest were organized by the china geographical society and the school of geography, geology, and planning at sun yat-sen university. the event was hosted by hebei normal university and featured over 85 teams with more than 500 students and teachers from 39 universities across northern china, including beijing normal university, capital normal university, and henan university. the competition was divided into two categories: physical geography and human geography. six first prizes, twelve second prizes, and several third prizes were awarded in each category. the 36 teams winning first and second prizes advanced to the national finals in xi'an. our college fielded one team in each category. under the careful guidance of their instructors, these two teams had prepared for five months, showcasing their enthusiasm for geography, strong research and innovation abilities, teamwork, and presentation skills. in the end, their presentations received accolades. the presentation titled "how highland urbanization safeguards the 'asian water tower'? - an empirical study based on plus and pfci" won the first prize in the human geography category and the award for the most academic theme. jiang zizhen, a student on the team, received the best male debater award. the presentation titled "remote sensing monitoring of forest carbon storage in qilian mountains" received the second prize in the physical geography category.

this year's contest had the theme "regional features and commonalities" and aimed to guide and encourage undergraduate students in geography to gain a deep understanding of the fundamental perspectives, philosophical connotations, and contemporary significance of geography. the contest emphasized recognizing the critical importance of carrying capacity for resources and the appropriateness of land and space development in optimizing the spatial development and protection layout. it encouraged students to use their knowledge, fundamental theories, and technical methods of geography, along with firsthand observations, research, analysis, and empirical evidence. the goal was to systematically comprehend the environmental and social foundations of their local regions, depict regional uniqueness accurately, and summarize regional regularities. this competition aimed to contribute to the implementation of national policies regarding land and space development and protection, as well as the integrated protection and management of mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes, grasslands, sands, ice, and snow, known as the "one-body" protection and management system.
