chien-lu ping is a professor emeritus at the college of natural resources and agricultural sciences, university of alaska, usa. he is a fellow of the soil science society of america, a member of the wetland technical standards committee of the united states, a member of the alaska state soil and water conservation committee, and a representative of the university of alaska in the u.s. cooperative soil survey. he has received the soil science society of america president's award. professor ping has long been engaged in teaching and research on soil formation and classification, soil survey research methods, and the characteristics of cold-region and wetland soils. he has published 110 sci journal papers in journals such as nature geoscience, edited or co-edited 25 professional books, and published 5 field investigation manuals. he has received research project funding from the national science foundation (1993-2005, 2023-2025), the department of energy (2012-2023), and the national soil survey center of the united states department of agriculture (1992-2012). professor ping has participated in field investigations of permafrost in the united states, russia, and china multiple times, serving as convener of the u.s.-russia permafrost and climate change research group, lead researcher for u.s. cooperation in soil studies in permafrost regions, and convener of the advisory group for the u.s. delegation to the qinghai-tibet plateau railway permafrost technology advisory group.
