on december 10, 2023, professor mou cuicui from the college of earth and environmental science at lanzhou university led undergraduate students majoring in natural geography and resource environment (class of 2021) on a visit to the national key laboratory of cryospheric sciences at the northwest institute of eco-environment and resources, chinese academy of sciences (nwieer). the purpose was to integrate theoretical knowledge taught in the classroom with practical experience, allowing students to deeply learn about the development of cryospheric science and related research through on-site learning and firsthand experience, thereby enhancing their understanding and interest in cryospheric science.

professor kang shichang, vice president of nwieer and director of the national key laboratory of cryospheric sciences, warmly welcomed the students and provided detailed introductions. professor kang emphasized the significance of human resources as a key factor in the prosperity of enterprises. under the guiding philosophy of party leadership in talent management, nwieer has consistently pursued reform and innovation to stimulate the vitality of talent. under this philosophy, nwieer has attracted a group of outstanding researchers with in-depth studies and rich practical experience in their respective fields.

to offer students a more visual understanding of cryospheric science research, professor kang led the group to visit the ice core storage room. here, students observed the state of ice cores and learned how researchers extract valuable climate information from them, experiencing the rigor and precision of scientific research.

following this, professor liu yaping explained the working principles and usage of instruments such as the stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer, ion chromatograph, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to the students, providing a deeper insight into the complexity and precision of cryospheric research. under professor liu's guidance, students gained a better understanding of the intricacies of cryospheric research.

under the guidance of professor chen yunfeng, students visited the science and technology museum at nwieer. here, teachers provided a detailed overview of the advanced technologies and equipment used to overcome various challenges during the construction of the qinghai-tibet railway, ensuring its safety and stable operation.

through this visit and learning experience, students gained a deeper understanding of cryospheric science, realizing its significance and practical applications. moreover, the activity enhanced students' interest and enthusiasm for scientific research, laying a solid foundation for their future studies and careers.
