from august 11 to 17, 2023, at the invitation of professor gou xiaohua and zhang junzhou from the key laboratory of western china's environmental systems, ministry of education, china, lanzhou university, doctor tim rademacher, postdoctoral fellow of harvard university and associate professor of the university of quebec in outaouais, came to the university for an exchange of academic knowledge, and gave a lecture entitled "are we not seeing the forest for the trees? difficulties with understanding and scaling carbon sequestration" and "understanding wood growth from the cellular to the globe". the presentations were moderated by zhang junzhou, a young researcher, and more than 50 students and faculty members from the college of earth and environmental sciences participated in the meeting both online and offline.
terrestrial vegetation plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. in the report on august 11, associate professor tim rademacher introduced the relevant experiments and progress made in studying tree-scale carbon dynamics by means of phloem ring-cutting, compression and cooling, and introduced the research progress in sugar maple sugar production process, forest management, and forest prediction. in the presentation on august 17, associate professor tim rademacher answered the questions of what are the limiting factors of wood growth, how do they change over time, how do they interact with each other, and introduced the main methods for predicting the future of tree growth. associate professor tim rademacher's presentation centered on the core issues of tree growth and introduced the latest advances in the field from different dimensions, which aroused enthusiastic discussions and speeches from the participating teachers and students.
from august 12 to 16, associate professor tim rademacher visited liancheng field station and the field monitoring and control experimental plots, and gave valuable suggestions on the related monitoring research. the students and faculty members exchanged views with associate professor tim rademacher on their respective interests and research areas.

doctor tim rademacher completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in botany and physical geography at the university of cambridge, and postdoctoral studies at harvard university before taking up a position as an associate professor the university of quebec in outaouais (uqo) in 2023, where his research focuses on forest physiological ecology. his current research focuses on tree physiological ecology and ecohydrology. he has published 30 papers in international journals such as pnas, nature communications, new phytologist, plant cell & environment.
