on the afternoon of august 29, 2022, qin dahe, academician of the chinese academy of sciences taught a course on "cryosphere science" to our undergraduate students majoring in physical geography and resources and environment from the grade of 2020. due to the need for epidemic prevention and control, academician qin dahe conducted this lecture online. professor mou cuicui from the college of earth and environmental sciencesassisted academician qin to complete the "first class" of "cryosphere science" offline.

at the beginning of the class, academician qin paid tribute to the memory of professor zhang tingjun, an outstanding scientist in the field of cryosphere science and a professor at the college of earth and environmental sciences, lanzhou university. he inspired the students to learn from professor zhang's spirit of loving science and dedication to science and education. in the class, academician qin explained the concepts and research scopes of cryosphere and cryosphere science, the relationship between the cryosphere and the climate system, the role of cryosphere science in economic and social development, and cryosphere science and geopolitics. academician qin pointed out that it is important to learn systematically from three aspects: basic knowledge, fundamental concepts, and basic skills, and to combine theory and practice to lay a solid foundation for future scientific research.

academician qin stressed that in the context of global warming, the cryosphere is experiencing rapid and widespread retreat, and various disasters and extreme events are occurring frequently. he hoped that students would think deeply about the reasons behind these abrupt changes and the impact of the abrupt changes on nature and human society, and actively pay attention to the frontiers of cryosphere science. in addition, academician qin hoped that students would learn english well and use the terminology of cryosphere science correctly. the class encouraged further learning through interactive discussions with students through listening quizzes, reading corrections, and presentations by student representatives. the course enriched the students' understanding of cryosphere science and stimulated their interest, which benefited students greatly.
