When 1980 came, people in the then Rhodesia were filled with happiness, celebrating the birth of Zimbabwe, not knowing what was going to soon unfold. Soon after the Zanu government that had just ascended to power trained a special battalion, the fifth brigade, code named Gukurawundi to commit Genocide in Mthwakazi.
The day this battalion was unleashed it went on a killing spree, killing unarmed citizens of all ages, not even sparing the unborn. Pregnant women had their stomachs brutally cut open by military bayonets, many were short in line-up parades, many were thrown down deep mine shafts-alive, many were even buried alive, many disappeared in the hands of this killer battalion and those who managed to escape never looked back.
All this terror and torture happened to the people of Matebeleland. This kind of act was a very well planned strategy by a group that aimed at destroying the Ndebele nation, wipe it out. It was a tribal act to suppress and oppress other tribe within the boundaries.
Their next step was to halt development in the region, devalue the education system in the region and deploy their favoured Shona elite in the region to monitor any sort of uprising or rebuilding of any Ndebele oriented values.
For nearly 40 years Zanu has been holding us hostage, denying us our God given rights, treating us as second class citizens in our homeland, looting our resources and deploying their kin in our land leaving us homeless, we have become orphans in our own home.
Sizwe sikaMthwakazi kusile, asisukumeni sime ngezinyawo. uMthwakazi (Matebeleland and Midlands) yilizwe esalitshiyelwa ngo Babamkhulu, asibumbaneni mahlabezulu sivuselele ubuntu bethu, sivuselele ilizwe lethu, sizibuse.
