Uloyiko dedicates 2020 Performances to Sydney Donald Malunga

Every year we choose one iconic and formidable heroic figure that played a significant role in the struggle of the emancipation of black people from white domination and supremacy and honour our performances with a dedication to their contribution towards the liberation struggle of black people.

Our 2016 Launch was dedicated to the resilience spirit of Chris Thembisile Hani, an uMkhonto weSizwe South African Revolutionary, who dedicated his life in fighting for the freedom of black people in Matebeleland, through Wankie and Sipolilo battles, and in South Africa itself. The Wankie and Sipolilo battles were conducted by uMkhonto weSizwe and Zipra liberation forces under the banner of Luthuli Detachment, commanded jointly by the able and eminent leadership of Zapu’s Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo and ANC’s Oliver Reginald Tambo.

Our 2016 launch at Hilbrow Theatre in Joburg was attended by almost all Matabeleland leaders including the charismatic Moses Mzila Ndlovu and the late Zapu’s intelligence supremo, Dumiso Dabengwa and many surviving victims of Matebeleland Gukurahundi Genocide.

2017 was also another big Year for Uloyiko’s Matebeleland Gukurahundi Genocide Play. The play premiered at Joburg Market Theatre and was also performed at Black Box Theatre in Cape Town. This time the dedication was to the late Commander-in-Chief of the Zipra forces and leader of Zapu Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo.

Uloyiko theatre organised the first Matebeleland Gukurahundi Genocide march in Joburg, South Africa and many people from South Africa and Matabeleland attended in big numbers and the march was a huge success.

The struggle continued in 2018 where our Play was the most nominated production at Zabalaza Festival at the University of Cape Town. It had a one week run at Theatre Art Admin in Cape Town.

Year 2018 performances were dedicated to all the babies that died during Gukurahundi Genocide. During the 2018 Year, Uloyiko was made aware about 5 babies that were crushed inside the grain pounder by the 5th brigade of Zimbabwe during the Matabeleland Gukurahundi Genocide. This gruesome and gory story made us dedicate all our progress and performances to those 5 little Matebele innocent souls who faced ethnic cleansing tyranny at the hands of the exclusively Shona 5th Brigade of Zimbabwe which was under the direct command of Robert Mugabe, Emerson Mnangagwa and Perence Shiri!

In 2019, Uloyiko’s Matebeleland Gukurahundi Genocide Play was chosen as one of the best 8 Youth Theatre Productions by the South African State Theatre. The South African State Theatre subsequently invited uLoyiko to perform during its Youth Expression Festival 2019. This time we dedicated the Year 2019 performances to one of the iconic and formidable heroes of the liberation struggle, the ZIPRA intelligence supremo, Dr Dumiso “Black Russian” Dabengwa. The late Dabengwa, affectionately and popularly known as DD helped uMkhonto weSizwe comrades in the trenches and was one of our honourable guests during the launch of our play in 2016.

As plans for 2020 shape up, the creative team of Uloyiko is dedicating this year’s performances to one of the most iconic and formidable sons of Matebeleland, the late honourable and the indefatigable Sydney Donald Malunga.

We remember this great son of Matebeleland who never wavered in representing the interests of the people of Matebeleland. 2020 may see uLoyiko graced with International performances. Therefore all our 2020 international performances will have scenes of the honourable and indefatigable Sydney Donald Malunga’s contributions for the emancipation of our people from white Rhodesian and South African dominance including contributions for the emancipation of  the Matebele people from black domination in an “independent” but black colonialist Zimbabwe. The late icon Malunga is well known for his great firmness against the murderous and genocidal Zanu regime of Zimbabwe. He died on 28th August 1994 in a suspicious road accident.

The dedication of 2020 performances to Malunga will remind everyone not to surrender to the pressure of oppression but to soldier on. It will remind the people of Matabeleland that although Malunga died but his indefatigable spirit and great contributions continue to live on and his legacy through his children is much alive. Malunga is a shining beacon of Matebeleland’s continuing struggle against all forms of oppression in Matebeleland and Zimbabwe in general and the wider world.

Long Live the indefatigable spirit of Sydney Donald Malunga Long Live!

Long Live the indefatigable spirit of Chris Thembisile Hani Long Live!

Long Live the indefatigable spirit of Joshua Nyongolo Nkomo Long Live!

Long Live the indefatigable spirit of Dr Dumiso “DD” Dabengwa Long Live
