Zapu's Complacency cost us in a big way

Zapu's Complacency cost us in a big way
Published: 12 June 2019 | by Dr Churchill Mpiyezwe Guduza

Baka Mthwakazi. I have since recognised that my article posted yesterday has provoked a lot of misunderstanding, if not negatively touched on the feelings of others. Some believe that I was too hard on former ZAPU.

To set the record straight, I was in no way comparing ZAPU and the ZANU-PF regime in terms of the human rights violations against the people of Mthwakazi.

Rather, I sought to point out ZAPU's naivety in not understanding what power entailed not only under the European colonial regime which it had fought gallantry against, but what the ZANU-PF regime would do with the newly acquired power. In this regard, I sought to highlight that one does not fight a fight or wage a war that is directionless. In other words, there was no need for ZAPU to wage a war against colonialism if it was not ready to govern.

Yet this is exactly what Dr Joshua Mqabuko ka Nyongolo Nkomo, when as Commander-In-Chief of ZIPRA forces told us when he came to disarm ZIPRA at its biggest military camp at Gwaai River Camp just before mid 1982. Dr Nkomo told us in his own words that "Zapu did not fight in order to rule but to liberate Zimbabwe".

He went on to say that "as you are being disarmed today, some of you will marry women and start families, some of you will start cooperatives and some of you will integrate into the newly formed Zimbabwe National Army" and Dr Nkomo continued in isindebele in these words "abanye lizathatha abafazi liyakhe imizi, abanye lizaqalisa njalo lingene kuma cooperatives njalo abanye lizangena ku Zimbabwe National Army" and still continued "sasingalweli ukuthi iZAPU ibuse, sasilwela ukuthi iZimbabwe ibuye".

Listening to these words as uttered by Dr Nkomo, apart from the ZIPRA combatants in the Gwaai River Camp was not a single ZIPRA member of the High Command, but Brigadier Chinenge (now General Constantine Chiwenga) representing ZANU-PF and its military wing ZANLA. With those words, Dr Nkomo had sealed the fate and existence of ZIPRA, and by extension of ZAPU without a single shot being fired.

Not long after that sometime in July 1982, six foreign tourists were allegedly abducted, and this incident was then used as pretext by ZANU-PF to set in motion the beginnings of the infliction of genocide against the people of Mthwakazi. No-one would be spared in the coming months, including Dr Nkomo himself who was forced to flee for his life into neighbouring Botswana  on 8 March 1983.

Astonishingly, not a single person of Shona origin who were in the leadership of ZAPU or as a civilian throughout the length and breadth of Mthwakazi was victimised, imprisoned, tortured, raped, disappeared or killed. Only those of Mthwakazi original diverse ethnicities and identities were subjected to unimaginable horror and brutality.

What is remarkable and incredibly disturbing being the fact that ZIPRA had been disarmed when ZAPU's leadership had intelligence not only about ZANLA continuing to bring in train loads of weapons into the country, but that the training of the Fifth Brigade had begun in earnest, so were plans for the imposition of a one party state.

Clearly, therefore, this was an irresponsible and reckless act by ZAPU and its military leadership to had waged a war against European colonialism, in which thousands of lives were invested and lost, only for it to surrender power to ZANU-PF just like that on a platter. Hence I was trying to make sure that all of us who want Mthwakazi to be free do not make the same mistake as ZAPU did when it surrendered power to the ZANU-PF regime in 1980.

To add salt to injury, once ZAPU had abdicated its responsibilities to the ZANU-PF regime, it did so voluntarily disarming its military wing ZIPRA in line with key tenets of the Lancaster House agreement, but knowing fully well that ZANU-PF and its military wing ZANLA were not abiding by the same agreement.

Furthermore, not only had ZAPU accepted a constitution drawn up by its former European colonisers, the British, but also continued to abide by its major disarmament provisions, resulting in the disbanding of its military wing, ZIPRA forces, and not its adversary ZANU-PF and ZANLA.

Now the consequences of this abdication of leadership by ZAPU are huge and thus far continue unabated for the last 40 years, with hundreds of thousands killed during the liberation of Zimbabwe, and still many tens of thousands killed during the Gukurahundi genocide, with many more falling victims to torture, rape, disappearances, etc, and then ethnic cleansing of all sorts, including the displacement of millions from their homeland in pursuit of survival outside Mthwakazi.

It should also be remembered that ZAPU has never at any time either apologised for its role of leading its followers nowhere, nor for the thousands of lives that were lost as a result of its directionless leadership, which achieved nothing but more and more unimaginable domination, subjugation and humiliation.

It is therefore within this context that I accused ZAPU of having committed genocide against its followers. I wish to withdraw that statement unreservedly and extend my sincere apologies to whomever might had been hurt by it. There is no time I could compare ZAPU's abdication of its responsibilities with the actual intent and precision planning of the Gukurahundi genocide by the ZANU-PF regime as well as its ethnic cleansing policies as espoused in its Grand Plan which was developed before Zimbabwe attained independence. Surprisingly, the ZAPU leadership had always be aware of this ZANU-PF grand plan from inception.

It is in this regard that ZANU-PF not only committed genocide by design, but also sowed seeds of deep hatred so deep that they can never ever be retrieved. Therefore, anyone who talks about devolution or think that the deep hatred of the Shona towards the people of Mthwakazi is as directionless, reckless and irresponsible as the former ZAPU was.

It was therefore against this backdrop and historical experience, that the reader also needs to recognise that I am one of those who carry enormous pain of having seen my own comrades, who today have no names, sacrificing their lives and dying for virtually nothing, except for a name called Zimbabwe. I don't remember a single day when and where ZAPU honoured its dead.

It is because of this reality that I would indeed strongly caution against any Mthwakazi movements repeating mistakes of the past under ZAPU whose consequences are far reaching, frightening, devastating, brutal, traumatic and forever lasting. And as such, all the people of Mthwakazi want is moving forward for their liberation, nothing short, nothing more.

We in the Mthwakazi Liberation Front are already living the dream of a free, independent and secure Mthwakazi. We are not talking about certain people in Mthwakazi, but about the love of all the people of Mthwakazi from the Zambezi to Bulilima to Limpopo to Mpumalanga and to Nkabazwe throughout the length and breadth of our country, Mthwakazi. This is why we have proposed the adoption of the Constitution for the Federal Republic of Mthwakazi, and not an absolute monarchy like Swaziland's King Sobhuza.

We have not only proposed new institutions for our beloved country but have also developed a National Anthem for it. Not least, recently we have proposed the setting up of the Mthwakazi Sovereign Fund which shall be responsible for developing all of our country socially, economically, politically, culturally, technologically, etc. We are in the process of opening this account which should reach you soon.

Only this way, can the Shona people also be liberated in their own country free of the burden of killing us, ruling us by conquest, etc, and indeed liberated from their deep seated hatred towards the people of Mthwakazi. There can be no question that in Mthwakazi, we the people of this land love each other without any regard to our diversity.

I thank you.

Abantuuuu!

Yithiii!

Mayihlome Ihlasele.

Mayibuye iMthwakazi.

Not only is the MLF leading the struggle, but it is ready to govern the Federal Republic of Mthwakazi.

From Umfoka Guduza.

MLF President.
