Honouring A Great Mthwakazi Thinker and Philosopher

MLF: HONOURING A GREAT MTHWAKAZI THINKER AND PHILOSOPHER, THE LATE DR EDWIN MKHWANANZI.

FROM MLF's PRESIDENT: DR C.M.GUDUZA

I met him sometime around 2007 and 2008 in London. From then on we kept in touch irregularly but with consistency when I assumed the Presidency of the Mthwakazi Liberation Front around 2016. Just out of the blue this year after I had come out of the hospital where I had spent approximately five weeks, sadly I learnt that Dr Edwin Mkhwananzi had passed on. This news devastated me so much that I was nearly hospitalized once more. The key difficulty concerned the fact that I had absolutely no details of his relatives from where I could mourn his death. To this date I was not able to meet his next of kin where I could convey my deepest condolences at his untimely death.

A friend of mine and great Mthwakazi activist and leader, Thembani Dube tried his best to comfort me, but it was a tall order as he himself also needed to be comforted. Perhaps the recognition which I provide in this piece herein shall go a long way in soothing my unended pain at the untimely passage from this earth of a great friend, colleague, comrade and Mthwakazian.

In one of his great insights and visionary writings, Dr Edwin Mkhwananzi writes:

The issue of the separate independence of the People of Matebeleland and the separate independence of Mashonaland is something that is here to stay and won't and will not be wished away or threatened or shouted out of existence, or closed out of political debate or constitutional life under the present Government and State. Nor can it be shot to silence through arms of war, political intimidation, or other insidious political activities and actions that create a political fait accompli of the existing of Zimbabwe State. It is therefore hoped that the people of Matebeleland and people of Mashonaland will grasp it very early on, and quickly, that the old methods of resolving political disputes through violence and other undemocratic means no longer have a place in our time, and that therefore both peoples will accept and deploy the modern political tools of our time at their disposal - negotiation and constitutional process - to resolve, peacefully and permanently, the twin issues of the separate independence of Matebeleland and Mashonaland that have blighted the post-colonial state established as Zimbabwe since 1980.

 Dr Mkhwananzi continues:

Genuine freedom is a universal right and demand. Where it is systematically absent - as it has been for Mthwakazi for nearly two centuries - it will be demanded. It is therefore a right of the people of Matebeleland to want and demand their freedom in political conditions where the people of Matebeleland feel it is the only right thing to claim, and get it, and where State power has been wielded as an axe against uMthwakazi by a tribalistic system determined to hold that tribal line to eternity. UMthwakazi is also not party to present-day Zimbabwe's succession politics, or beyond. From here on, only uMthwakazi politics counts. Only uMthwakazi's full freedom matters.

Dr Mkhwananzi continues:

Ultimately the success or failure of uMthwakazi's social revolution will depend, not so much on those who enthusiastically support it, or those who fervently deride it, respectively, as it will on its own audacity to dare, or failure to do so, and on its own ability or inability to articulate and champion an alternative vision for a viable and achievable for Mthwakazi against received wisdom about executing revolutions, and against a received political mainstreamism - and order - that are maintained by brute force, deception, and tribal hate at the best of times.

Lastly, Dr Mkhwananzi underlines:

Not doing anything is the only true enemy of uMthwakazi's social revolution, not committing State resources to stop her. And a social revolution does not need martyrs, but living beings who can be conscripted and counted into the People's Army called the March for Freedom. This revolution - uMthwakazi's social revolution - needs uMthwakazi in all her numbers, shades and strands. Because enough long became enough.

That colleague, comrade and Mthwakazian is Dr Edwin Mkhwananzi whose life was cut short untimely, a great leader of Mthwakazi. He believed wholeheartedly in the Restoration of the Kingdom of Matebeleland. That is the only thing that distinguished us as I believed and continue to in the Federal Republic of Mthwakazi for the benefit of its diverse peoples. This is just a beginning of honouring this great scholar and philosopher of Mthwakazi. He is speaking to all of us from his final resting place and telling us to continue demanding our universal right which is genuine freedom. Vuka Mthwakazi as he says that we become enemies of Mthwakazi's march to freedom by not doing anything.

Mayihlome ihlasele, Mayibuye iMthwakazi. An appropriate tribute to one of a kind. LAFA ELIHLE.
