PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF HRM KING MZILIKAZI II ON THE KINGSHIP ISSUE

6 December 2017

In 1868 King Mzilikazi the founder of the Matabele Nation died, then followed a difficult two years of contested succession which ended after a bitter civil war that saw many fine people lose their lives. Lobengula was crowned King after this civil war and he went on to kill all he perceived as competition. Why was there a contested succession? Why did it take a war to install Lobengula as King? People don’t throw their lives on the line without a deep conviction of that which they believe in the dispute. That Lobengula overcame militarily does not make his cause authentic; history is replete with examples of people who overcame with unauthentic causes e.g. Rhodes’s victory over the Matabele comes to mind.

In this article we will look at the contested succession of Lobengula and then look at the controversy surrounding the revival of kingship and statehood that is going on now, pitting Peter Zwide against Bulelani Colin and against Stanley Raphael. We will look at the eligibility of each against the known norms.

Mzilikazi, when he became king, he married maNxumalo. MaNxumalo was the queen who was to bring forth an heir to the crown. Any of the King’s wives after maNxumalo were not queens to bring forth an heir to the crown, only by maNxumalo was the king to get an heir. If she remained childless the King would marry another for that purpose, as his subsequent wives after maNxumalo were IZANCIZA ZENKOSI.

As was and is the custom maNxumalo came accompanied by bride’s maids of which maTshabalala was one of them. This maid or UMTHANYELO was to assist the queen do menial chores like sweeping the courtyard, carrying water, grinding meal and weeding the fields. If the king took interest in her she would become one of IZANCIZA ZENKOSI not a queen. It is this bride maid or UMTHANYELO that is the mother of Lobengula. It is said the king was told that he had a son, by maTshabalala three years after the event. MaNxumalo gave birth to Nkulumane, Hlangabeza and Zinkabi. Nkulumane was the older brother to Hlangabeza.

When journeying from the Transvaal the nation split into two groups, one under the command of Gundwane and the other under the king. The one under Gundwane arrived first. The king took three years more to get here. Meantime the chiefs decided to install Nkulumane as king so that, that group could function normally. When king Mzilikazi arrived, he found a new king installed in his stead. There are many speculations as to what happened then, yes speculations are what they are and as usual devoid of substance. The reality is that Nkulumane and the Indunas who had installed him were sent back to SA, where they were later encountered by Rhodes on his first journey to Mashonaland after he had occupied it in 1890.

When the king died in 1868 efforts were made to bring back Nkulumane to take over. History is hazy as to what transpired. It is possible Nkulumane declined as he was then established in the Transvaal. After he declined the next in line was Hlangabeza, so it was a great surprise to the royal household and nation when Mncumbatha, who apparently had been dethroned from chieftainship by King Mzilikazi before his death for “unspecified” reasons, decided that Lobengula should take over, hence the opposition that led to a bitter civil war. Lobengula was victorious in this contest using guns. It was a violent succession that led to a violent reign that ended violently. During his reign he killed a lot of his brothers that he earned the epithet: “INGQUNGQULU EMADOLO ABOMVU NGOKU GUQA EZINGAZINI ZABAFOWABO” meaning: the eagle that has red knees because of kneeling in the blood of his brothers. He killed Hlangabeza who was heir apparent after Nkulumane declined or was not found. One of Hlangabeza’s sons escaped, he is the progenitor of Stanley Raphael Khumalo.

The question is; was Lobengula eligible to take over? To answer that question let us imagine a maid who has an encounter with her boss’ husband, and has a son by the boss’ husband. At the death of the boss’ husband this son kills all the children by his mother’s boss and takes the whole estate.

Does he and his posterity deserve to keep it? Definitely not! Society must express its revulsion to the idea and punish the evil doer. Clearly Lobengula was not supposed to take over and that disqualifies all his offspring.

Peter Zwide and Bulelani Colin are disqualified by that their progenitor Lobengula was not eligible; he is as the son of the maid in the above illustration not eligible. We will examine their claim though.

It is claimed “INKOSI IZALA INKOSI”. Yes it is true only a sitting king brings forth an heir to the throne. Let’s examine Peter’s claim against this rule. Peter’s father was not a king nor was his father before him, so his grandfather was not a king and his father was not a king, so he cannot claim the crown on the basis of this rule. Next Bulelani; his father, his grandfather and great grandfather were never kings and he comes from Njube who was not the first born of Lobengula, neither is Bulelani the first born of his father and therefore could not be heir even if Lobengula was legitimate. This disqualifies him on the “INKOSI IZALA INKOSI” rule.

Examining Stanley Raphael Khumalo’s claim on the “INKOSI IZALA INKOSI” rule the same obtains. His progenitors from Hlangabeza were never kings therefore he does not qualify by this rule. In fact, none of the royals qualifies by this rule; therefore another process must be invented to establish who should revive the kingship and kingdom of Matabeleland. Stanley Raphael Khumalo claims divine anointment. God raised him up and anointed him king to revive the kingship and kingdom in answer to the cries of the people of Matabeleland under the yoke of oppression, first by the colonialists and now by the Zimbabwe Shona government. This claim has been viewed by sceptics as unconvincing and therefore they dismiss him as one deluded. Some have suggested that he be committed as insane.

The majority of Matabeleland is people of faith believing ultimately in God, so his claim must be investigated by all people of faith to establish its truthfulness or fallacy. At a MTHONTISELO ceremony, uBaba uThobela the Keeper of Njelele said that Stanley Raphael Khumalo is legitimate and that the other Khumalos must cease contesting what does not belong to them.

Further he said some Khumalos are not what they claim to be. He says without mentioning names some have come as Khumalo’s but when inside the shrine they would be another surname.

What emerges is that none of King Mzilikazi’s offspring is identifiable as legitimate to take over by the established rule; further Lobengula was not legitimate as demonstrated above, so disqualifying

all his offspring. Therefore, none should lay claim to the crown. How then must a king be identified after a redundancy of over 120 years?

First; all Khumalos including Lobengula’s offspring who claim to be Mzilikazi’s offspring must submit to DNA testing to establish their biological authenticity. Next all must submit to all processes and procedures; spiritual and physical including casting of lots (INKATHO). None of that has been done on the three front running aspirants and therefore none must be considered above the other. Of all Khumalos only Stanley Raphael is willing to go through all those screening mechanisms.

Withstanding what Baba Thobela says the nation must demand that all submit to the screening processes. The aspirants must then layout their program to free Matabeleland and its people. Bulelani and Peter have said nothing as far as freeing Matabeleland is concerned, theirs is a kingship under the existing conditions, much in the same way as the Indunas who have done nothing to heed the cry of the people, who seem to be there to silence the people’s cry against the ongoing oppression.

Stanley Raphael Khumalo has outlined his program for Matabeleland in his GADADE DECLARATIONS. That document every Matabele must make himself familiar with. He revoked the “Matabeleland Order in Council and Rule by right of Conquest”. He nullified all agreements entered into after 1893. He nullified the Lancaster House Agreement. He nullified the 1923 union of Mashonaland and Matabeleland and declared that hence forth he is the only authority in Matabeleland.

Prior to the declarations he had written to the queen demanding that she revoke “Matabeleland Order in Council and Rule by Right of Conquest”, the Queen did not respond until the stipulated time elapsed, hence his unilateral declarations. Robert Mugabe the past president of Zimbabwe was written to and no reply. He made efforts to see him travelling to Harare and State House, but he proved evasive refusing to see him. He has already written to the new president seeking a meeting to map the withdrawal of Zimbabwe from Matabeleland. Of the three he is the only one worthy to be followed by all Mthwakazi. There are many activities he has done especially in working for regional and international recognition, yes, the work is hard, yet he is making inroads. What is needed is for all Mthwakazi including the Khumalo’s to coalesce around him to actuate what he has declared. He needs all of us!

We acknowledge the efforts of all the groups, formations and individuals both old and new for their genuine concerns about Mthwakazi and its people but now it is time for such formations to come under the King, King Mzilikazi II. There is no logic in continuing to canvass for what has been achieved. It is a waste of effort and resources both human and material.

The sponsors of these groups and formations have an agenda to keep Matabeleland under oppression fearing its rising will jeopardize their investments and expose them to litigation as regards their historical crimes. They have a willing partner in the present Zimbabwe regime as it committed crimes against Matabeleland; sadly, they have partners as a result of ignorance in Matabeleland groupings and formations who continue agitating for elections and all things pertaining to being part of Zimbabwe which the King nullified in his declarations. It is also the King’s responsibility to deal with the Gukurahundi issue at the right time. Matabeleland now has its Authentic Leader; INKOSI Mzilikazi II.
