1893 Movement bids farewell to the doyen of journalism, Thabo Kunene
Published: 06 October 2017 | by Thembani Dube & Ayanda Manala
It is with great shock and sadness that the 1893 Mthwakazi Restoration Movement has learnt of the sudden passing of Thabo Kunene, the most gifted, courageous and down-to-earth Mthwakazi journalist of our generation. Put simply, Kunene was a doyen of journalism. He contributed immensely to journalism in uMthwakazi and beyond.

Kunene left us at a time when he had just joined, in a supportive role, the Information and Publicity Department of the 1893 Mthwakazi Restoration Movement in July this year. Therefore, his sudden passing has dealt a devastating blow to that Department and the 1893 Mthwakazi Restoration Movement.

There is no doubt that, with Kunene on board, the Information and Publicity Department was strategically poised to launch its restoration ballistic missiles in the media circles, curving out and expanding a niche for uMthwakazi’s suppressed narrative.

uMthwakazi has therefore lost a patriot and a seasoned journalist par excellence whose journalistic work covered varied issues and made his resume colourful and extensive.

Kunene has, however, left us a legacy worth emulating and that legacy is a generational mandate to persist doggedly in the struggle for realization and restoration of our rights and freedoms as a Nation.

We take this opportunity, on behalf of the 1893 Mthwakazi Restoration Movement, to send our sincere and deepest condolences to the Kunene family during this time of grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

We are also very thankful to Lisa Kunene, Thabo’s daughter who is keeping us updated about the funeral arrangements of her father. She is a strong woman.

May Thabo Rest in Peace.
