uLoyiko duo involved in a car accident amid threats

Cape Town- It has come to our attention that two of uLoyiko Theatre leaders got involved in a car accident in Cape Town at around 7 am today.

Ayanda Manala and Prosper Nkosi were driving around in Cape Town in their Toyota RunX, when its breaks failed resulting in a crash with a BMW in the vicinity.

umthwakazireview.com is reliably informed that the duo was not badly hurt. Manala’s arm was slightly twisted while Prosper's knee was slightly injured. They attended the hospital and were released today. Both cars were damaged and had to be towed away.

Members of uLoyiko have recently been the subject of threats from anonymous phone callers in RSA who have asked them to withdraw their Gukurahundi Genocide play and stop the project altogether. They have also been subjected to attempted bribes in exchange of the theatre group abandoning the play and not showcasing it in South Africa and Internationally.

In August 2016, Ayanda Manala, uLoyiko's Researcher, was robbed in Johannesburg by a group of thugs traveling in a car on his way to OR Tambo Airport. In the same month, several of uLoyiko Theatre advert posters were pulled down prior to the play being staged at the Joseph Stone Theatre in Cape Town.

uLoyiko, “The Fear” is a play produced by Siphesakhe Youth Organization (SYO) that tells a story of the horrors of Gukurahundi, an ethnic Genocide committed by Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s government against the people of Matebeleland and Midlands in Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1987.  The play was launched successfully in Johannesburg at the Hillbrow Theatre on the 25th June 2016.

The launch of the play attracted the attendance of prominent former Zipra commanders cum politicians today. In attendance was Dumiso Dabengwa, the former ZIPRA intelligence supremo and current Zapu President and the former ZIPRA platoon commander and current leader of Alliance for Salvation party (ANSA), Moses Mzila Ndlovu. The launch was also attended by the Vice President of Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) who is a Gukurahundi Genocide Researcher/Scholar and an Ex-ZIPRA freedom fighter, Dr Mpiyezwe Guduza.

The theatre group also held a 380 Degrees Imbizo Demo in March this year in Johannesburg, RSA, highlighting the Gukurahundi Genocide issue and the continued subjugation and oppression of the people of Matebeleland in Zimbabwe.  The Demo called for Truth, Justice and Reparations for Matebeleland for the Genocide as well as for their freedom from a ruthless regime that has suppressed them since 1980.The Demo was a resounding success for uLoyiko and the people of Matebeleland. It significantly contributed to the awareness of this Genocide in South Africa and Africa.

In April this year, the Gukurahundi Genocide bounced back in the international headlines after a St Andrews University Lecturer, Dr Hazel Cameroon released a study (https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/news/archive/2017/zimbabwe-cameron/) that revealed that the then British Government led by Margret Thatcher in the 80s was "wilfully blind" to the Genocide committed by Robert Gabriel Mugabe. The paper says that this was done by Thatcher’s government to safeguard British economic interests in Zimbabwe at the time. These revelations have provoked a huge outcry from the surviving victims of Robert Gabriel Mugabe's ethnic Genocide in Matebeleland and calls have been made for an international investigation into the Genocide.

As regard the threats that uLoyiko Theatre activists are receiving and facing, it remains to be seen whether the South African government will continue to stand aside when its own citizens are threatened in its own territory. It will be a dereliction of duty on the part of the South African government not to intervene and protect its citizens from harm in its own country.
