It is a while that the people of Matebeleland have been calling for a separate State of Mthwakazi, from Zimbabwe and in the process many activities have been done to ensure the GOAL is achieved. In 2012, M.L.F petitioned Zimbabwe through its Pretoria Embassy, demanding that Zimbabwe, walk out of Mthwakazi peacefully, to avoid any chance of serious conflict. In the petition, M.L.F warned that if Zimbabwe wanted to take them lightly ,they could do so in their own peril, because they were not backing off from the agenda no matter what treatment they received from the “colonial” Zimbabwe.
M.L.F went on to describe their secession agenda as an AGENDA WHOSE TIME HAS COME, which they said absolutely no-one could STOP. Is it really the time that Mthwakazi gain her nationhood and independence and is the Mthwakazi Agenda really unstoppable? This is one question that many people ask themselves.
This week after the launch of the retired Matebeleland journalist, Jonathan Maphenduka’s book titled “THE RULE BY CONQUEST- THE STRUGGLE FOR MTHWAKAZI the hopes of Mthwakazi gaining her independence got renewed and Mckay Tshuma of Mthwakazi Research Institute, got the time to talk to David Magagula, spokesperson for M.L.F to hear from them as an organization how much ground they have covered in as far as the liberation of Mthwakazi is concerned and whether they still maintained that their agenda was unstoppable.
Mckay Tshuma is (MT) and David Magagula is(DM)
MT: It has been a while since we last spoke to you Sir, but every time you see us you definitely it must ring a bell that we are here for an update on the political front. Good evening Sir.
DM: Good evening Mr Tshuma, I am happy to see you again and good evening to your audience and Mthwakazi at large.
MT: Mr Magagula, brief us on a number of developments ranging from your Resolutions at your last conference right through to where the Party is today, regarding the Struggle for Mthwakazi, leading to the long awaited Mthwakazi All People's Conference.
DM: Very well, let us begin with our Resolution to empower Mthwakazians. As MLF we have managed to establish a University for the people of Mthwakazi. We have since raised the consciousness among our people to pride themselves as a nation, appreciate themselves for who they are and as a result we have witnessed a mushroom of music groups, writers groups, other political outfits advocating for the same, we feel our resolution is taking route.
(2)The Resolution to unite all Mthwakazi formations is on track. We have dispatched three rounds of letters to our sister Organizations for participation on the All Stake holders conference. The venue has been decided and final logistics are being worked on. So I can say MLF is fairly on track.
(3)The Resolution to empower our President has been felt as MLF is undergoing reshuffle, as witnessed by the re-deployment of former Chair to International Relations, the appointment of Fund Raising Secretary Miss Nomagugu Khumalo, the appointment of a new Chair lady, Miss Prudence Moyo for example.
(4) The Resolution to reach out to the world and expose our struggle has also seen MLF visit quite a number of Embassies and Communities, We have addressed a sizable number of events where we have highlighted the plight of Mthwakazi and the role of MLF in liberating the nation.
MT: Do you see the Struggle gaining momentum or it is slowly dying a slow but sure death?
DM: The Struggle is gaining strength day in day out. Recently the Struggle has been given a very strategic boost by Honorable Maphenduka Jonathan, through his work"THE RULE BY CONQUEST ( the struggle for Mthwakazi) if I quote rightly. It has lifted the spirits of every Mthwakazi Revolutionary already in the trenches and motivated those who had not yet joined the struggle to do so. Of late the office of Zimbabwean Vice President Emmerson has been very busy trying to rubbish away the calls for the independence of Mthwakazi.
MT: Mthwakazi Republic Party have clearly shown that they are not for secession-as recently said by Mqondisi Moyo, what is your feeling regarding Moyo's sentiments?
DM : Mqondisi Moyo is rather stretching it to far,but coming to their statement they said that they were not seceding but restoring. To us that is one bread looked at from different angles. We don't think they have differed. They still maintain the call for Independence and on that score we support them.
MT: Is the population of Mthwakazi all for secession?
DM: That the population of Mthwakazi is one hundred percent behind the liberation of Mthwakazi cannot be over emphasized but the problem is the fear gripping our people that they can't openly say they do support the idea for fear of reprisals. I would how ever challenge any one to a referendum of only Mthwakazians to prove other wise.
MT: MLF has pulled through financial difficulties, who is sponsoring MLF?
DM : MLF has up to now been self sponsoring. It is the members themselves who have been footing every bill of MLF and have seen it grow from strength to strength. We want to thank them for their sterling work so far and urge them to double their sacrifices as the task ahead is still huge.
MT: Some people have viewed Mthwakazi state as to small in terms of it being recognized, is that true?
DM: Those who say Mthwakazi is too small to be a country should explain first how big a standard country should be. secondly Mthwakazi is geographically bigger than Britain, Lesotho, Swaziland Togo, Benin to name just a few and our population is far more than that of Botswana. We have enough resources both natural and human. What can fail Mthwakazi being a State and lastly we are talking about a State that existed, although as a Kingdom and by that time people were few and technology and indeed education(scientific) was none existent. Now we are in a much more better position to govern ourselves.
MT: Regarding MLF leadership, can one safely have confidence on the credibility of MLF leadership, on the same note can we say MLF leadership is inclusive of all Mthwakazi tribes?
DM: On leaders of MLF one can safely say that people should learn and appreciate that leaders come and go. Today we may have very good leaders and tomorrow the story may not be the same but what is very paramount are the institutions and parameters by which MLF leadership abide. Once these institutions are strong ,people will not worry about leaders but how they implement or fail to implement statutes of those institutions. I can safely say the leadership is fine and where it isn't something is being done as the reshuffle is still on-going.
MT: Its rumored that Mzila's formation at home may attract some of your members within the their streamline, how far with that rumor and if it is true, what impact will it have on your organisation?
DM: MLF has heard that there is something like that but facts are scanty. About MLF members joining such we haven’t heard. How can any sane member abandon a train in motion opting for one yet to take off? Members have really worked hard and tormented to put MLF where it is and a lot of thinking needs to be done before one leaves such work. We have heard about the formation of yet another Pro Mthwakazi formation, led by Honorable Moses Mzila. MlF have rules and guidelines by which members live. Otherwise on the formation itself, MLF applauds the creation of such because they further enhance and speed up the process of conscientization of our people on the need for Mthwakazi Freedom. I want to say again that multiplying the baskets that carry eggs and putting eggs in all is a sure way that some eggs will reach home. The nation understood how the oppressive occupying government was bent on arresting and even assassination of MLF leaders and they have come up with the idea of many organizations speaking one thing so as to divert the enemy attention.
MT: Where do you see MLF in 2/3 years time?
DM: In two to three years time MLF should have defined the road-map and have a vividly clear route on how to attain independence. The envisaged government frame work must be in place and the Government In Exile should be in place. Mthwakazi Governing Policies must be in place and tens of thousands of our children should be enrolled in our University taking various disciplines, readying for Mthwakazi independence. A lot of ground should be covered by that time.
MT: Thank you Mr Magagula for your time. We shall always be in touch with you.
DM: Thank you.
