Of Mthwakazi Statehood and Kingship Contestation

The Mthwakazi nation has been without a King since 1893. Since then there has been numerous attempts to resuscitate the statehood, kingdom and kingship of Mthwakazi. The efforts gathered momentum since Zimbabwe independence and with it the intensification of oppression, discrimination, human rights abuses and genocide. These spoke evermore urgently to the nation that to survive as a nation it has become imperative that the statehood of Mthwakazi be revived as a separate entity from Mashonaland/Zimbabwe.


Some have asked why now? Implying that if we could survive all these years without our statehood and monarchy what has changed now? Maybe to answer that question we would ask it differently. African countries had survived long under colonialism why then demand independence as they demanded and gained it? They were independent countries before colonialism enjoying freedom, and masters of their destiny, free to exploit their resources for their benefit.


Further freedom is a powerful incentive to those without it that they are prepared to give their all in the pursuit of it. Mthwakazi was an independent state with a system of governance far advanced at the time. In the opinion of foreigners not congruent to the people running naked and unable to read and write. Our land tenure system was head and shoulders above all systems including that of the British. Our wealth distribution system was second to none as the testimony of the British themselves confirms. They found no poor person. The social system established and cemented by UBUNTU had no thieves.


Lord Macaulay in 1835 said “I have travelled across the length and breadth of Africa and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber that I do not think we will ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Africans think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation” . What a glorious time; it is worth reviving, it is worth fighting for, it is worth dying for.


Willie Lynch a slave owner in 1712 wrote “Our EXPERTS warned us about the possibility of this phenomenon occurring, for they say that the mind has a strong drive to correct and RECORRECT itself over a period of time if it can touch some substantial original historical base: And they advised us that the best way to deal with this phenomenon is to shave off the brute's mental history and create a multiplicity of phenomena of illusions.” Clearly Africa has a lot to regain, it is not only replacing foreign rulers by African rulers but replacing the systems bequeathed us by the foreigners bent on keeping us subservient to them.


It is the desire to recover what was lost that Mthwakazi like all nations wants her independence and separation from Zimbabwe, which is following a system foreign and in conflict with her own.
 

Some have termed Mthwakazi’s desire for independence as tribalism. Would it be correct to term the desire of African countries for freedom and independence as racialism? In fact that desire was fueled by the racist policies of the colonial governments, so is Mthwakazi’s desire fueled by the tribalistic policies of the Zimbabwe government.


Now let us look at reviving the Kingship. How must it be revived? Who must ascend to the throne? Kingship is YAHOVAH’s chosen governance system. He chooses an individual to preside over a nation in accord with His objectives for that nation and surrounding nations. Any other system is not YAHOVAH ordained. Sadly we are a planet in rebellion against YAHOVAH; this is why there is animosity towards monarchial governments; some of them are counterfeits set up by the devil to give monarchial governments a bad reputation leading to their wholesale rejection.


Mzilikazi was born a king for it is YAHOVAH’s way of doing things. He chooses a person before he or she is born, and shows it by a sign or signs during pregnancy and early life of that person. Usually there is a counter by the devil inspiring people to work against that. Moses was born a liberator of Israel, the devil inspired Pharaoh to kill all male children to by chance kill the liberator, same as the Messiah; Herod killed the male children in an effort to kill the Messiah.


Mzilikazi was born to leave Zululand and come and establish here. That was YAHOVAH’s will who can oppose it? It is the devil’s will to oppose YAHOVAH’s will in this and other matters. YAHOVAH moved that there be a quarrel between Mzilikazi and Tshaka so that His purpose of removing Mzilikazi from KwaZulu and planting him in present day Mthwakazi may be realized. So he left KwaZulu and settled in the Transvaal, so as to put space between himself and Tshaka, but that was not where YAHOVAH wanted him, so problems broke out between him and the Boers, leading to his departure from the Transvaal.


The nation left the Transvaal now a conglomerate of different peoples, headed to their final destination, present day Mthwakazi. The nation split into two groups. This was strategic and packed with wisdom. The first group of seniors, women and children was under Gundwane. In this group was Nkulumane. The second was under the king himself, in this group was Hlangabeza. Hlangabeza was beloved of his father that his offspring has as a praise name “SITHANDWA SE NKOSI”. This was done that if the King’s group met with mishap and failed to arrive then the Gundwane group would continue as a nation under Nkulumane as King. On the other hand if the Gundwane group met with a mishap and perished, the King’s group would continue as a nation under the King, and Hlangabeza after him. Lobengula was not in the equation. He was not born a king he had to usurp it through arms, maintain it by force and exited by force, a clear indication that his was not YAHOVAH ordained.
 

Mischievous history says that when Mzilikazi found the Nkulumane group having set Nkulumane as king he killed Nkulumane and the Indunas, logic demands how can he punish the people for implementing a strategy he had devised? Nkulumane and the Indunas were not killed as false history teaches but sent back to establish a kingdom and kingship. This they did in the Transvaal, where they were encountered by Cecil Rhodes in 1891. People with sentiments of Lord Macaulay and Willie Lynch would not pass an opportunity to peddle their nefarious philosophy. We need to wake up and look beyond the written records of those who hate us. It is a certainty that some of these claimants are knowingly or unknowingly being used by the Macaulays and Lynches of this world, bent on keeping Mthwakazi enslaved.


After Lobengula exited the nation remained without a king for over one hundred years, though there were efforts to revive it, these failed. YAHOVAH was not in these efforts. In the 1980’s the efforts were again resuscitated but nothing came of these efforts. Peter Zwide was identified as heir apparent but nothing happened further than that. The efforts continued at a sedate pace in the 1990’s and 2000’s, until 2015 when Stanley Raphael Khumalo came forward claiming divine anointment. Then all hell broke loose. Bulelani was identified as heir on the basis of being a descendant of Njube. Peter resurrected his claim on the basis of him being an offspring of Nyamande, who briefly and clandestinely presided as king after Lobengula, and later aborted.


Let’s look at the claims of Peter and Bulelani. We will first look at Lobengula. Lobengula was born of maTshabalala an umthanyelo of Mwaka the Queen. Ma Tshabalala was not the queen; akazange amekeze. Her offspring had no right to the throne. A Queen like the King was identified at birth and she was brought up in preparation to be queen. She was closely monitored. She was taught and rigorously screened, in preparation of her role as queen; IZALA NKOSI.


Before marriage she was examined to ensure that no man has known her. So that the king is the first to know her to ensure that her offspring will indisputably be his. The search for and marriage of a queen was a national event, the nation paid LOBOLA for her, because she was performing a national duty. Ma Tshabalala was not subjected to all this monitoring and screening, so another man could have known her before the King, it could be she was already with child when the King knew her. This disqualifies Lobengula and his offspring. Robert Moffat wrote a book in which he discloses some damning information about Lobengula , this book was withdrawn from public circulation and placed under lock and key in the Buckingham palace together with property belonging to King Mzilikazi and Queen Mwaka .


Further, Lobengula did not die and be buried, no one knows his grave. How can you revive his kingship when you don’t know where he is? When Lobengula left he took his kingship with him to wherever he is now, so only Mzilikazi’s kingship can be revived. To understand this let us take a lesson from the ceremony of UKUBUYISA. During this ceremony the one presiding over it
 

goes to the grave of the deceased and draws a branch over it and drags it to the home. Mzilikazi’s grave is known and it is easy to perform this ceremony, but not so with Lobengula, his grave is unknown this ceremony cannot be performed for him, how then can you revive his kingship without doing this first?


It is alleged that he crossed the Zambezi River and went north as far as Chipata where he ruled until his death in 1926, so if the Zambians want a king of Lobengula’s line and there is none in Zambia they can come here and seek for an heir, to rule there for that is where his kingship was replanted; If the allegations are true.


Now let’s look at Stanley’s claim. He claims he comes from the house of Hlangabeza, the same Hlangabeza who was beloved of his father, the same Hlangabeza who was strategically part of his father’s group, so that if anything happened to the king , he would take over as leader and king of the group , the same Hlangabeza who was killed by Lobengula for having kingly qualities and dignity, the same Hlangabeza whose offspring Lobengula sought to annihilate, of which one of them providentially escaped and hid among the Kalanga not only physically but by surname as well, taking the surname TSHUMA, USITHANDWA SE NKOSI, UYENGWAYO.


There were occurrences of an unusual nature as only to be supernatural during the time his mother was carrying him. He goes on to claim divine revelation as to the purpose he was born, in a manner unmistakably divine. He says he dismissed it but it insisted, until he acknowledged it. He changed his surname officially back to Khumalo. He went to the Khumalos who accepted him as one of them, he disclosed his divine calling and split the Khumalos into three some accepting, some opposing and some undecided. Now is he eligible? If his claim that he is the offspring of Hlangabeza is authenticated, he is definitely eligible.


That authentication must be done by the house of Khumalo and some members of Mthwakazi nation who will look at facts without any bias. For his part he said he was and is willing to undergo any screening mechanisms the Khumalos and the nation may deem necessary.

From the above we learn that Lobengula was born of a woman who was not a queen, that his being a son of Mzilikazi can be disputed and was disputed by Mbiko ka Mandlenya and others; this status quo extends to his offspring of which Peter Zwide and Bulelani Colin are a part.


Lobengula was not a crown prince. The crown prince was Nkulumane and next in line was Hlangabeza. Lobengula’s mother was not born to be a queen and therefore her offspring were not to ascend the throne. Lobengula ascended the throne by force, maintained it by force and lost it by force. Lobengula left taking with him his kingship, so his kingship was uprooted from here and planted where he eventually died, that is where it must be revived. It will be a grave mistake for Lobengula’s offspring to ascend to the throne, an error that will as in the past cost the nation dearly. It will be a grave error to revive Lobengula’s kingship, a kingship YAHOVAH threw away, an error that will as in the past discomfit the nation. We have since 1893 been in a
 

sorry state as a nation because of that error. Kings don’t kill innocent people as Lobengula did killing his brothers without attracting adverse outcomes for themselves and the nations they rule. Further reviving Lobengula’s kingship will be maintaining an error akin to maintaining British rule by right of conquest; the nation cannot advance like that. That error must be corrected and kingship returned to its rightful house, the house of Mwaka from whence Hlangabeza comes. Lobengula’s kingship was disputed it is an error to revive a disputed kingship without addressing the dispute surrounding it in a conclusive manner.


The only kingship that is not disputed and is therefore eligible for revival is that of Mzilikazi.

Stanley’s claim is being disputed by some Khumalos and some in the nation; it will be folly to continue without addressing the disputation surrounding his claim. How then must we proceed? All three and other Mzilikazi offspring desiring to be king must undergo DNA screening to ensure they are indeed Mzilikazi’s offspring. This technology has advanced considerably that the results are said to be 99.9999% accurate. The margin of error is negligible. The Israelis did DNA screening with shocking results. If it is established that they are Mzilikazi’s offspring then they must undergo further screening like INKATHO and others; those unwilling to undergo these screening measures being automatically disqualified. The results from these measures will give the nation an assurance that it is in the divine will.


If we are to proceed as at present it would be best for one to look at the objectives of the aspirants. Peter and Bulelani want to work with the government, so does Stanley. The difference being that Stanley wants to engage the government of Zimbabwe to enable a smooth separation of Mthwakazi from Zimbabwe. He outlined his policy clearly in his GADADE speech of 05 November 2016. To do justice to Peter and Bulelani they have yet to articulate their objectives and policies, but from what one gleans from what has been said, they intend to work with the government as the Indunas who support them are doing. Question: is this satisfactory? Is it benefiting the nation? The Indunas have been reduced to government enforcers at best and ZANU PF enforcers at worst. Has the nation waited all these years for this type of kingship, a kingship subservient to the Zimbabwe government? As a nation we deserve better and we must aspire to the best. With these considerations any sensible person of whom there are many and a majority in Mthwakazi must stand with Stanley as at present, and after with whomever the screening measures will identify.
