Dear Your Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi,

Re : REQUEST FOR FORMAL PROTECTION OF THE PEOPLE OF MTHWAKAZI

Greetings, Your Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi,

The above matter refers,

I write to Your Excellency on behalf of the People of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland), as well as the Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) that I am involved with.

Given the absolute chaos and pandemonium that is Zimbabwe today it is more apparent than ever that Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) should return to its old status, that of an independent sovereign state. It is important to recognize that whereas this pandemonium is felt for the first time in the last few weeks by people of Shona origin, the Zulu/Ndebele population of Mthwakazi on the other hand have been under this absolute barbaric environment characterized by genocide, ethnic cleansing, rape, disappearances and unimaginable brutality and torture for the last thirty-six (36) years, whilst the entire world, including the ANC government looked the other way.

I do not intend to dwell on past history but suffice to say the Kingdom of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) came to an end by one unprovoked attack by the British colonialists led by the British South Africa Company (BSAC) in 1893. After this crushing defeat, the state of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) was then joined with that of Mashonaland to form a unitary state system that was then called Rhodesia, and today, Zimbabwe. Since 1893, the Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) Nation has been Ruled by Conquest through Queen Victoria’s Rule by Conquest Instrument, the Matbeleland Order-In-Council of 18 July 1894.

From the time the so-called Zimbabwe attained independence in 1980, when Robert Gabriel Mugabe assumed power, the Zulu/Ndebele nation has known only an entrenched rule by conquest, which found expression through genocide, ethnic cleansing and worse forms of barbarity and marginalization. Again I need not elaborate to His Excellency, as His Excellency may already have all of that information. What does need to be highlighted is the urgent need for Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) to go it alone –in terms of a complete exit from the current imposed unitary state of Zimbabwe.

What we see in Zimbabwe today is man-made – man- made by a regime that has been hell-bent on annihilating the people of Mthwakazi (Matebeland) from the outset, as if the Zimbabwean regime was mandated by Britain which is responsible for annexing Mthwakazi country in 1893 through the Matebeleland Order-In-Council of 18 July 1894.

Clearly therefore, the Zanu-PF regime should never have taken the reigns over Mthwakazi country in the first place, especially in light of the fact that, the Shona people had had no knowledge of power hitherto, which could be compared to that of the Great King of the Zulu Nation, King Tshaka Ka Senzangakhona, nor that of King Mzilikazi Ka Matshobane, no wonder then of their reckless experimental behavior with the killing fields of the Zulu/Ndebele people of Mthwakazi. Further, the Shona people under their first so-called ruler Robert Gabriel Mugabe should never have claimed supreme legal authority over the Mthwakazi country, as they could neither lay claim then, nor today, of the existence of a single grave of their forefathers in the Mthwakazi country.

It is in that light, therefore, that we as MLF, felt compelled to seek Formal Protection from the Great Zulu Nation through our Great King, His Majesty, King Goodwill Zwelithini. As such we were compelled by reasons of history, reasons of belonging and reasons of humanity and survival as a people of Mthwakazi, to copy Your Excellency, the submission that we have made to our Great King, for Formal Protection of the People of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) in present day Zimbabwe.

The People of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) demand the Restoration of their State/Kingdom, solely in order to ensure the survival of its people as a member of the human race in this world. The people of Mthwakazi can no longer tolerate the genocide and ethnic cleansing onslaught from a regime hell-bent on destroying them.

Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) is ready to go it alone, not only because of the abundance of mineral wealth and natural resources in their country, but primarily because they never consented to being incorporated into the present unitary state in the first place. Rather the present unitary state from inception as Rhodesia was achieved through the instrument of the Rule by Conquest.

It can no longer be business as usual in this day in age for neighbouring countries, including the Zulu Nation as well as the world community at large to look the other way when genocide and continued ethnic cleansing and marginalization is inflicted on the people of Mthwakazi not because they have done anything wrong, but simply for who they are, the people of Mthwakazi – Zulu/Ndebele people. The people of Mthwakazi can no longer accept to be denied even the basic rights of human decency which ought to be protected through a basic impartial independent judiciary.  We are all in agreement to those principles.

As we seek Protection from the Great Zulu Nation on grounds of heredity, descent and humanity, pursuant to the Restoration of Mthwakazi, we fully recognize that all legal transactions prior to 1980 would be adhered to – all of this opening a wonderful opportunity for a new beginning in an arena of intense turmoil.

We have had close ties with the people Botswana, who have carried the burden of sheltering the people of Mthwakazi for approximately half a century. We are equally convinced that the South African government, through the influence of the Great Zulu Nation would welcome this appeal for Restoration and Protection of the People of Mthwakazi as an opportunity to redress its share of the burden of sheltering millions of Mthwakazi citizens since 1980.

This also represents a boundary not only to the Zulu Nation, but to the Western countries as well, against a triumphalist Chinese influence which is not to be under estimated. On the economic front, the Restoration and Protection Agenda for Mthwakazi would reverse the triumphalist tendencies of China which is being given land of the Mthwakazi people on a silver platter by Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s Zanu-PF regime. Given the entrenchment of the Chinese and now the Russians wanting their share we see very little hope of a satisfactory outcome.   It is for this reason that the MLF has been involved with the Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) question for a considerable long time.

We fully appreciate that His Excellency, The Prince, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, has a lot on his plate and the whole issues of the Zulu Nation will be with His Excellency for a long time to come. However, if His Excellency, The Prince, Prince Mongosuthu Buthelezi could give this some thought and be assured that we as an Front for the people of Mthwakazi, will be more than willing not only to meet with the entire Zulu Leadership led by both the King and the Prince, but would be willing to supply any information that would be required regarding the plight of the People of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland).

Zimbabwe as an imposed unitary state comprising two different states is no different from many countries in the past such as Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, former Union of Socialist Republics (USSR), with South Sudan being the latest to separate from Sudan through a multiplicity of mechanisms and revert back to their original status as sovereign independent states.

We are thus emboldened by this reality, that as an imposed unitary system that was imposed on both the peoples of Mashonaland and Mthwakazi (Matebeleland) without their consent, the sovereign independent status of both states can be restored through a velvet divorce mechanism, with each determining the destiny of its citizens without fear or favour.

As we present this copy of our submission to His Majesty, King Goodwill Zwelithini, to His Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, we hope and pray to the High Gods and Great Ancestors of the Zulu Nation, that His Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi will use all the influence, experience and world statesmanship at his behest to ensure that the plight of the People of Mthwakazi is discussed at any forum and world stage, including at the United Nations.

It is therefore our hope and prayers to the High Gods and Great Ancestors  of the Zulu Nation, through the influence of his Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, that the world will both recognize and understand that this matter which has been the greatest denial of basic human rights to the Mthwakazi People, through the Rule by Conquest for more than 123 years, is brought to an end with the Restoration of the State of Mthwakazi as an independent sovereign state amongst all peace loving nations of the world, small or large.

Finally, I am honoured with pride to thank His Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi for his attention to this copy of the submission to His Majesty, The King, King Goodwill Zwelithini regarding the plight of the People of Mthwakazi (Matebeleland). I now look forward to hearing from His Excellency soon. Wishing, His Excellency, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi good health.

Yours faithfully,

Dr Mpiyesizwe Churchill Guduza

MLF Vice President
