Thembani Mthembo Dube
Agenda4Action continues with prominent uMthwakazi leaders and their organizations. This week, just before Christmas and the New Year, I engaged the President of Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP), Mr Mqondisi Moyo. Mr Moyo and his party are at the thick of things in Zimbabwe, advancing Matebeleland causes and issues under a very challenging political environment. Mr Moyo shares with us the vision of his party and the challenges it faces today. He also shares the party’s view on the appointment of the new Vice President of Zimbabwe, Mr Phekezela Mphoko and what it means for uMthwakazi people. I put the following questions to him regarding Mthwakazi Republic Party and vision for Matebeleland.
Thembani Dube: When was Mthwakazi Republic Party formed?
Mqondisi Moyo: Mthwakazi Republic Party was formed in August 2013 and was launched on the 11th of January 2014 at the Presbyterian City Church in Bulawayo Mthwakazi’s Capital city.
Thembani Dube: What Matebeleland causes is Mthwakazi Republic Party seized with?
Mqondisi Moyo: MRP was launched on the 11th of January 2014 with a view to give uMthwakazi an alternative towards achieving her main goal which is its Independence and self-determination. Mthwakazi Republic Party has three main targets which it seeks to achieve in the next two years namely:
1. That we shall mobilise uMthwakazi people, have structures from branch level up to the National level, try as much as possible to unite Mthwakazi where we can, that also includes working with other already established political parties and civic society organisations that share the same view with us.
2. That we shall mobilise financial and material resources to undertake reburials of Gukurahundi Genocide Victims and honouring their graves.
3. That we shall as a party come up with a strong committee made up of uMthwakazi people representing all groups the Church, Traditional leadership, diaspora, political parties within Mthwakazi, civic society, academics, etc. The responsibility of that committee shall be among other things to engage the Zimbabwean Government, The British Government, South African Government, SADC,AU ,EU, UN and the rest of the World with a view to seek self-determination as uMthwakazi. Whether through a Referendum or otherwise.
Thembani Dube: As a party seeking Matebeleland’s independence from Zimbabwe, what challenges have you faced so far in advancing this cause?
Mqondisi Moyo: The challenges that we face is lack of resources in this case T-shirts, vehicles, offices, and financial resources to be able to travel across the length and breadth of Mthwakazi among other things. The other challenge is fear among uMthwakazi, fear to speak and participate freely in their cause due to inhumane treatment which they went through during Gukurahundi and due to further intimidation whenever its election time.
Thembani Dube: The new second Vice Secretary of Zanu Pf and Second Vice President of Zimbabwe Phelekezela Mphoko says Gukurahundi is a conspiracy of the West and holds the West responsible for it and not Zanu PF. What is your reaction to this as Mthwakazi Republic Party?
Mqondisi Moyo: We are not surprised by his comments considering his back ground. We are reliably informed by cdes in ZAPU that he joined the CIO in early eighties, way before the Unity accord. We will not even be surprised that he might have even participated in Gukurahundi Genocide. Secondly we believe that Gukurahundi was a conspiracy between the West and Zanu PF especially Britain but Mphoko knows the truth. He is intelligent enough to know that the 5th brigade was led by Zanu PF members like Perence Shiri. He also is aware that Mnangagwa, Mugabe and Sekeramai among others participated fully and even promoted the killers of our relatives for job well done. The killers were not the West but they were Zanu PF members and Zimbabweans.
Thembani Dube: Mphoko is now the Vice President of Zimbabwe and working with those who are the brains behind Gukurahundi Genocide. What is Mthwakazi Republic Party’s take on Mphoko’s integrity and honour?
Mqondisi Moyo: Esintwini kwakuthiwe owotha umlilo wesela lisela. To us Mphoko is no better than Enos Nkala. There is no way the people of Mathebeleland can honour Mphoko. Mphoko’s liberation credentials are questionable in the first place, secondly Mphoko and everyone else from Mthwakazi who is working for Zanu PF is an enemy of the struggle of uMthwakazi. Therefore they do not deserve our honour, because they are not working for us but they are working for their personal glory and singing for their own super. Mphoko lost honour and integrity the day he joined the CIO when other Zipra and Zapu cdes were being persecuted by the same CIO and other security operatives.
Thembani Dube: Zanu PF's night of the long knives continues unabated. Mugabe is clearly a sunset leader and is about shape up and ship out of politics. What do these political upheavals mean for uMthwakazi people?
Mqondisi Moyo: We urge uMthwakazi not to read much into what is happening in Harare. It is time to organise ourselves as uMthwakazi, unite like never before and speak with one voice, refuse to be drawn into Zimbabwean politics not only Zanu PF but MDC-T andall the political formations headed from Harare who are the beneficiaries of the Satanic 1979 Grand Plan andthe rest of those who work in the so called National parties. Now is the time to demand self-determination. It is that time when it has become more necessary than never before to put our Agenda on the international forum.
Thembani Dube: It is end of the year and Christmas and New-year is around the corner. What message does Mthwakazi Republic Party has for the people of Matebeleland?
Mqondisi Moyo: It is unfortunate that as Matebeleland people we have nothing to celebrate here at home, as you might be aware most of our industries have either closed or relocated to Harare leaving many of us jobless, and the liquidity crunch has crippled the people’s livelihoods. There is nothing much we can say except to encourage uMthwakazi to put her faith in seeking Self-determination. It is the only way uMthwakazi will liberate herself. We encourage uMthwakazi to make uMthwakazi Agenda for self-determination her New Year’s Resolution Number ONE.
Thembani Dube: Thank you Moyo for being with us on Agenda4Action. If people want to get in contact with Mthwakazi Republic Party, how can they do so?
Mqondisi Moyo: It is my pleasure to be on this programme Thembani. Mthwakazi Republic Party appreciates this opportunity to put its case forward for self-determination.
